Granny’s farm in South East Kansas needs a rain. It has not rained for so long that the ponds are going dry. Grasshoppers came and ate most of the fields so Papa sold his cattle. Papa will plant new grasses in the spring and buy calves to put back on the land. It means hard times when you have to go so long before it rains but the good times make up for it.
Granny and Papa took the cattle to market so they can go to new areas of the country where there has been rain and plenty of grass for them to eat.
On the way home Granny and Papa was sad to sell all their cattle but they knew it was for the best of the cattle to go where there is plenty of food and water to get them through the winter. Granny and Papa is looking forward to the spring and wondering when will it rain?
