“Granny why don’t you have the windows opened ? There is such nice breeze out today,” asked Papa as he walked over to raise the windows. “I was thinking about it Papa but just haven’t taken the time, replied Granny. “Thanks the breeze does feel wonderful blowing through the screen.” “Are you all finished with the field in the back forty Papa or do you still have some work to do?” Granny asked as she sat down at the supper table beside Papa. “I’m all finished,” answered Papa as he scooped up a large spoon full of mash potatoes and gravy. “I think you and I will relax and watch one of those western movies you always want me to watch, said Papa. “Sounds great and I will fix us a bowl of popcorn and a drink just like at the movies,” laughed Granny.
Granny and Papa finished their supper, cleaned the kitchen and is getting ready to watch the movie. Granny and Papa did not know there was a raging fire storming over the plains and was getting closer and closer to Granny’s acres. Just as the movie started a pounding at the front door. Papa went to the door and there was Sheriff Clarence standing there. Papa asked Sheriff Clarence to come in but the Sheriff said he just wanted Granny and Papa to know about the fire. “It has already burned a couple of barns down over at the Hoerning farm,” said Sheriff Clarence. “Well, there goes the movie,” said Granny. “Looks like it,” said Papa. “We better go make sure all the animals are up and don’t get caught in the fire.
Papa and Granny go to the pole barn get into the Papa’s old 1948 Ford F1 truck and off they go across the field. Papa and Granny can see the bright orange, yellow and blue light of the fire.
“That fire is blazing high,” said Granny “in fact you can almost hear the snap and crackle of the fire as the wind is whipping it though the air.”
“Well, I think all the animals are up Granny so we can go back home and make sure the fire does not reach Granny’s acres,” Papa said as he turn the truck around to start home. “Wait Papa”, called Granny. “I think that is Bessie our cow standing over to your left.” Papa turned the truck lights over to the left and sure enough there Bessie was.
“What is blazing hills is Bessie doing all the way out here all by herself,” said Papa. “I don’t know Papa but if we don’t hurry and get her out of this field the fire is going to circle around all of us,” answered Granny. The fire was raging fast across the plain and snapping, cracking and burning everything in its way.
As Papa and Granny got out of the truck they could see Bessie had a new born calf and did not want to leave it behind. Papa picked the calf up and put on the back to the truck. Papa and Granny headed for home with the new calf while Bessie walked behind following the path.
“Papa, asked Granny, “What made you want to go looking for the animals in that field?” “I don’t know Granny I just had a feeling and I’m sure glad I did.” “Me to,” answered Granny, “me to.”
