A breeze was blowing across the field and the little animals were all out and enjoying the nice warm summer day. The ground began to rumble and the animals all looked up. What is that, they wondered as they watched it going down the road. That looks like a big green monster they all began to mumble to themself. The creature turned off the road and onto Granny’s Arces. Across the land it went and as it moved, the grass was going down. “It is eating our grass and we won’t have anything to eat,” cried Timmy the calf. The little colt looked up. “Boy that is really big, you don’t think, you don’t think it will eat us to do you?” “I hope not but I am not staying here to find out,” said Timmy. Timmy went looking for his mother and told her about the big green monster that he saw.
Mother cow laughed and started to tell her little calf and Harry the colt about the big green monster. The big green monster comes each year about this time. “The big green monster is what humans call a tractor. The tractor cuts the grass down. After it cuts the grass down it goes back and racks the grass into what they call windrows. The tractor comes again and sucks the grass in side a machine that put the grass in big round bales. The human than uses the tractor to put the grass they now call hay into the barn. When the cold winter comes and there isn’t any grass on the ground they feed the stored up hay to us. That is how we make it though the winter without starving.”
“That is great,” said the little calf and colt. “The big green monster is not a monster at all, it is a tractor that is storing up food for us this winter.” “Yes, now skip along and go play mother is very busy,” said mother cow.
