Granny was driving her little old 1948 Ford down the lane to the pecan orchard. Oh, I can’t wait to pick the pecans so I can make my fudge thought Granny.  Granny stops the truck, gets out and starts to pick up the pecans.  As Granny was filling her sacks she heard a noise.   What is that noise thought Granny to herself as she began  to look around.  Granny walked down to the largest pecan tree in the orchard.  Granny saw two baby squirrels fussing over a pecan.  They both wanted the same pecan.  “It’s mine,” said the little squirrel.  ”No it’s mine,” said the other.

“Why are the two of you arguing over the pecan when there are so many pecans on the ground and in the trees?”  asked Granny  “Well, because it is mine,” said the gray squirrel.  “No it is mine, I saw it first and Benny took it from me and I am going to tell our mother,” said the other little squirrel.  Granny laughed and asked the little squirrel her name.  “Penny” said the little squirrel, “and Benny is my brother.”

“Well Penny, what were you going to do with the pecan?” asked Granny.  “I am going to take it to our mother to store for winter,” said Penny.  ”What about you Benny?” asked Granny.  “I wanted to take it to mother to store for winter,” said Benny.   “So both of you want to do the same thing?” said Granny.  “Don’t you think that your mother would be very pleased if you stopped fighting over one pecan and both of you brought home pecans for her to store for winter?”  “Oh yes!” said Benny and Penny.

Granny went to her  truck and reached for a sack.  She cut a small corner out of each side of her sack so Benny and Penny could carry a sack each. “Here you go,” said Granny.  Go and fill the sacks with pecans for your mother to store for your winter food and stop fighting over one little pecan.

The little squirrels’ eyes got big and filled with tears. “Oh, we are sorry Granny for being so selfish.  Thank you for the sacks, we will fill them to the top and take to our mother. ” “Your mother will be so proud of all your hard work,” said Granny.

The little squirrels filled their sacks and ran off to give the pecans to their mother to store for the cold, cold winter that would soon be here.

Granny finished filling her sacks with pecans and headed home to make yummy fudge.
